Cancer
& Blood Disorders Appeal
The facilities
on the Haematology and Oncology Unit do not meet the requirements
of patients suffering from cancer and blood disorders.
The Royal Bournemouth Hospital
has been chosen as a cancer waiting times demonstration site
due to its excellent performance. But improvements in facilities
and equipment need to be improved to match standards.
The wards currently see and treat up to 80 patients per day
but have to operate under very difficult conditions.
The limitations include:
The facilities for the provision of privacy, confidentiality
and the maintenance of patients’ dignity are extremely
limited.
There is only one six bedded bay exclusively for patients receiving
chemotherapy.
There is only one six bedded bay for patients receiving blood
transfusions, bone marrow aspirations, stem cell collection,
blood tests and medical assessments.
By virtue of their illnesses
the patients are understandably at their lowest ebb when they
arrive at the Unit and the provision of purpose built facilities
accommodating their need for pleasant surroundings can provide
not only a relaxed atmosphere but also maintain privacy and
dignity.

Additional Information
We
aim to increase the number of rooms available.
This is so that medical staff who conduct first visit explanations
to patients, do not have to do so in the open bays or waiting
areas where other staff and patients are likely to hear.
We aim to raise £2 million to provide a new purpose-built
Cancer Unit to overcome these problems.
