The Jigsaw Appeal Timeline
We may have moved on to a new Appeal, but that doesn't mean we've forgotten all the brilliant things that you have achieved to raise money for the previous appeals. A huge thank you to everyone has been involved with the Jigsaw Appeal in the past, and we hope that we can count on your continued support with the new Appeal.
With the timeline below you can relive some of the moments from our previous Appeals.
June 2003: The Jigsaw Appeal is Founded
In 2003 the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals launched the first Jigsaw Appeal to raise money for the Radiology Department. As a result of all of your hard work in fundraising, we managed to reach our target of £2.5 Million so that we could purtchase five live-saving scanners for the hospital.
The Kilimanjaro Trek
One of the events that featured in this appeal was the Kilimanjaro Trek, where 6 intrepid trekkers climbed Africa's highest mountain, towering 19,340 feet
above sea level. The 10-day trip involved a physically demanding 7-day strenuous 33km hike winding up through equatorial rainforest and across high moorland
to the glacial terrain of the summit.
2006: The Jigsaw Cancer and Blood Disorders Appeal is Launched
After the huge success of the orignal Jigsaw Appeal, we decided to launch a new Appeal, this time aiming to raise £2 Million so that we could build a new Cancer and Blood Disorders unit at the Royal Bournmouth Hospital. This Appeal saw a great deal more publicity and a fantastic line up of events.
Thanks to a massive amount of participation from the community and corporate organisations we reached our target over the three years that the Appeal ran for.
18th November 2006: Chewton Glen Spa Evening
At our opening event, 120 ladies were treated to a Spa evening at Chewton Glen. They receieved champagne and canapés in the hotel's spa, and then enjoyed a talk by nutritionist Barbara Cox.
This was to be the first of many success events hosted at Chewton Glen Hotel & Spa.
20th May 2007: Sponsored Mass Abseil
In May 2007, 60 brave people abseiled 110 feet down the side of Russell House, Oxford Road, Bournemouth.
This fantastic sponsored event raised £4073.06 towards the Appeal.
27th August 2007: Music for a Summer's Evening
In another hugely successful event at Chewton Glen, over 600 guests enjoyed excerpts from popular operas whilst picnicking and drinking champagne on the lawn in the grounds of this stunningly beautiful venue.
October 2007: Great Wall of China Trek
Another expedition, this time with 20 trekkers walking the Great Wall in Mt Si Ma Tai Region over 9 days. The trekkers also visited the Imperial Palace (Forgotten City), and the Summer Palace.
Their efforts raised a fantastic £32,740.74 towards the Appeal
2008: New Mini Cooper Raffle
Throughout 2008 we ran a raffle for a New Mini Cooper which had been donated to the Appeal. Raffle tickets were sold at £5 each, and the raffle raised a spectacular £33,8342 for the Appeal. In October 2008, the actual draw was held, and congratulations made to the very luck winner, Mr John Davies.
26th - 28th February 2008: RBH Variety Show
Running for three nights, this annual popular show was a huge success.
Many members of hospital staff took part both on stage and behind the scenes to provide a highly entertaining and very funny revue.
4th April 2008: Jailbreak
8 teams of 4 people registered for this event. They were required to escape as far away as possible within 12 hours from leaving Christchurch Recreation Ground. Prizes were awarded for the furthest distance on different modes of transport. The winning team managed to make it as far as Milan!
This event raised £4,404.83.
25th April - 25th May 2008: Everest Trek
12 trekkers signed up for this strenuous 4-week challenge to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the first successful climb. The intrepid 12 travelled to the original Everest base camp
This event raised £10,849.25.
12th - 22nd May 2009: Peru Trek
The Peru Trek was our last big expedition for the Jigsaw Cancer and Blood Disorders Appeal. This 11 day trip involved a trek along the spectacular Inca Trail to Macca Picchu. Trekkers also spent time in the remarkable city of Cusco, plus visiting the Sacred Valley of the Incas and it's unique traditional markets.
